About QtEmu and the Future

QtEmu is a frontend for qemu-based CPU virtualizers. This sounds complicated, but, thankfully it's not too hard to use with QtEmu.

Coming soon to a Theater near you!

Well it's not a movie really, but it's still cool. Basically QtEmu lets you run another computer within your current Linux OS. When the new version - 1.8.0 - comes out, it will support a lot of very cool things like automatic bridged network setup, suspend/resume, pausing/unpausing the virtual machine, the ability to eject virtual media, and more. All of this works pretty well at the moment, but since i'm also the one who added most of these features, I might be missing a few bugs. You have to edit a line in the source code at the moment to change network modes, but if you want to help squash bugs, then checkout the SVN version, there are more instructions at qtemu.org.

The future

Even though we aren't even done with this version, we are planning ahead for the NEXT version will bring. Here's a quick rundown:

  • A new, improved GUI
  • Multiple hard disc images
  • Multiple optical drives and floppies
  • Host USB device support
  • An embedded, scaleable virtual machine viewer
  • An embedded virtual machine terminal
  • More network modes (including virtual distributed ethernet)
  • possible integration with NetworkManager and KDE Solid to help support laptops

there's no timeline to any of this yet, but hopefully there will be soon! Also, if you have any suggestions for features you would like to see, let us know!
