There are a number of software projects i'm keenly interested in, and at least a few I work on.

• QtEmu

  This is a project to build a graphical frontend to qemu and kvm. Qemu is a cpu virtualizer - a lot like vmware. Kvm is qemu modified to use hardware virtualization - it will run virtual machines at near native speeds. These don't have a nice, pretty interface thike VMWare though... until now.
